ABOUT THIS GUIDE

A field guide, with its sources showing.

Understand what an approach contributes—and what still needs checking.

How entries are researched

Each entry links to an official specification, its creator, a primary study, or a historical source. Sources establish the underlying approach; our templates and examples apply it to a bounded situation. Benefits described as possible are not claims of a measured advantage for every reader or AI model.

We distinguish formal standards, modeling notations, documentation conventions, and learning methods. Naming a standard in a prompt does not guarantee that an AI tool implements it correctly. Historical roots and current editions are different facts. Edition-specific claims should be read alongside the named source.

What the exercises establish

The closed questions have authored answers for their stated assumptions. Open exercises use self-review rubrics. An attempt record does not establish mastery, and an explained answer is not certification. Three examples cannot cover an entire standard.

The formal-method entries introduce models through authored traces and small source examples. This site does not run TLA+, Alloy, SCXML, or general-purpose validators. Passing a structural check and showing that a real system behaves correctly are separate activities.

Models and the tools that draw them

C4 is an architectural model; UML is a modeling language. Mermaid and PlantUML are text-based diagramming tools that can express some of these views. Choosing a renderer does not choose the right abstraction or verify the result.

Activity stays on your device

The guide sends no application analytics or exercise answers to a server. Bookmarks and attempted/revealed exercise IDs are stored locally; free-text answers are not saved. GitHub Pages may maintain its own security logs. Following a source link takes you to that site and its policies.

Corrections and review status

Initial editorial review: 24 October 2026. Technical browser checks and editorial review do not substitute for observing real readers. A five-reader task study remains outstanding until participants complete it. Please report a specific factual error, ambiguous exercise, inaccessible interaction, or broken source through the repository.
