Progressive disclosure
Reveal detail when it becomes useful while keeping essential information easy to find.
What it helps you do
Let readers start with a manageable view and deliberately reveal the depth they need.
Starting knowledge: No specialist knowledge is required.
- Keep the main result and essential constraints visible.
- Label additional detail by the question it answers.
- Preserve orientation when details open or views change.
The problem it came from
Progressive disclosure is an interface-design pattern. Jakob Nielsen’s 2006 account describes prioritizing common information and moving additional complexity into secondary views.
Applying the pattern to explanation is a design choice: initial simplicity and available depth must be balanced against the risk of hiding necessary context.
Work through an example
Visible: a loop repeats an action for each item.
Example: print each name in a list.
More detail: what the loop variable holds.
Advanced: how iter() and next() participate.
Always visible: the exact code and expected result.- The introductory view answers a coherent question.
- Labels tell the reader what opening each layer adds.
- The same facts must remain consistent across levels.
Where it helps. Where it stops.
Use it when
- A topic has useful beginner, intermediate, and advanced layers.
- A reference page serves readers with different levels of prior knowledge.
Potential benefits
- Readers can control the amount of detail they inspect.
- A stable structure can support both a quick answer and a deeper investigation.
Limits and common mistakes
- Hiding warnings, prerequisites, or the main answer makes the interface misleading.
- Too many nested disclosures make information hard to discover or print.
The prompt below asks for this structure. It does not guarantee accuracy, complete coverage, better learning, or conformance to a standard. Treat those outcomes as separate checks.
Practise the judgment
Try a choice, inspect a boundary, then explain a case yourself. Hints and answers are available whenever you need them.
Which information should stay visible in a simplified deletion procedure?
Hint
Separate optional detail from necessary context.
Explained answer
Best answer for this case: The irreversible consequence
A consequence essential to an informed action must not be hidden merely to simplify the screen.
Which disclosure label is most useful?
Hint
The label should preview the information.
Explained answer
Best answer for this case: Why the list must be sorted
A specific question helps the reader decide whether the hidden content is relevant.
Design three layers for explaining a workshop waitlist.
Hint
Which misunderstanding could occur before opening a detail?
Explained answer & self-review rubric
Start with what joining the waitlist means and that it is not a confirmed place. Next show how an offer is made and expires. Finally explain the ordering rule and exceptional cases.
- Keep the non-confirmation warning visible
- Name each deeper question
- Preserve the same underlying rules

How to return to the overview:
Review the result
- Are critical conditions visible from the start?
- Do disclosure labels predict their contents?
- Can a reader reach and print all detail?

Reader and existing knowledge: [describe]
Task and desired outcome: [describe]
Use these principles: Keep the main result and essential constraints visible.; Label additional detail by the question it answers.; Preserve orientation when details open or views change..
Preserve source facts, identifiers, quantities, conditions, exceptions, and uncertainty.
Separate supplied facts from assumptions. Ask for missing information instead of inventing it.
Explain your representation choices and provide a review checklist. Do not claim formal compliance or correctness from formatting alone.
